World Environment Day, a global platform for raising awareness and encouraging action for the protection of our environment, is officially celebrated every year on June 5th. However, due to scheduling constraints, our Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna commemorated this important day on 13th June 2025 with great enthusiasm, commitment and active participation. The event was aimed at raising awareness about environmental protection, reforestation and encouraging sustainable practices among students, staff, and the community. The Programme was conducted for the students and teachers of J/Kaithady Vigneshwara Vidyalayam & J/ Navatkuli Tamil Maha Vidyalayam. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 5 teachers, 68 students.

The program was organized by the Department of Gunapadam, Faculty of Siddha Medicine in alignment with the recommendation of the 7th Department Meeting held on 09th of June 2025. It was conducted during the academic field hours of 2nd BSMS students guided by academic staff and temporary demonstrators of department of Gunapadam.

The Programme commenced at 8:30 AM and concluded at 12:00 PM. The first session took place in the herbal garden within the faculty premises, where participants were introduced to a variety of 500 species of medicinal herbal plants and the net house which contain 200 species of hill station plants focusing on plant identification, medicinal properties, and traditional home remedies and the need to conserve medicinal plants.

Following this, Dr. (Mrs.) Vidhya Milano Prasad, Head of the Department of Gunapadam, delivered an address to the invited schools. Herbal porridge was then distributed to the school students and teachers. Herbal porridge is provided to school students to promote its health benefits and to introduce it as a part of school welfare initiatives. The session continued with a PowerPoint presentation, during which Mr. S. Sethushan and Miss S. Lukshika, representing the 39th batch of Siddha medical students and supported by their entire batch, delivered informative talks on environmental pollution, deforestation, and reforestation.

The Environment day Programme was concluded with the distribution of medicinal herbal nursery plants to the participated teachers and some students. The environment day program was guided by Dr. (Mrs.)V. Sathiyaseelan, Dr.(Mrs.) N.Nithiyakumar, Dr. (Mrs.) Vidhya Milano Prasad,  Mr, J. Eugin Benat, Mr. A. Sanjayan, Miss.T.Sharsaayini, Miss.V.Gumuthagini and Miss. A. Mayoori.

The Environment Day Programme was a great success, effectively spreading awareness and promoting the importance of a greener environment. It served as a powerful reminder that collective effort is essential to protect and preserve our planet. Participants left the event with a renewed sense of commitment to environmental responsibility.
