  • Field Visit Kallaaham Kaithady

    As part of the curriculum for the subject Mooligaiyeyal – II, a field visit was organized for second-year BSMS students to Kallaaham (Kaithady) on 21st February 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The primary objective of the visit was to provide students with practical, hands-on experience in the identification and study of medicinal plants, thereby enhancing their understanding of medicinal botany.

    The field visit was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Mrs. V. Sathyaseelan, Dr. Mrs. N. Nithyakumar, and the temporary demonstrators from the Department of Gunapadam. During the visit, students actively engaged in identifying and documenting various herbs and medicinal plants, recording their Siddha names, botanical names, and therapeutic uses.

    Special emphasis was placed on the study of flora thriving in saline and waterlogged environments, with insightful discussions highlighting the unique adaptations and medicinal properties of such plants. A total of 170 medicinal plant species were identified during the session. Among these, rare species such as Vishnu Kiranthi and Venkodiweli were also observed and examined in detail.

    This field visit significantly contributed to the students’ academic development by bridging theoretical concepts with real-world application. It also underscored the importance of conserving biodiversity and reinforced the value of traditional knowledge in modern medicinal practices.

  • Field Visit Mattuvil

    Location: Mattuvil Mangrove Area

    As part of the Mooligaiyeyal – II curriculum, a field visit was conducted for second-year BSMS students to the Mattuvil Mangrove Area on 3rd January 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The primary aim of the visit was to provide students with practical experience in the identification and study of medicinal plants, particularly those thriving within mangrove ecosystems.

    The visit was organized under the expert supervision of Dr. Mrs. V. Sathyaseelan, Dr. Mrs. N. Nithyakumar, and the temporary demonstrators from the Department of Gunapadam. Throughout the visit, students actively engaged in the identification and documentation of various herbs and medicinal plants, carefully recording their Siddha names, botanical names, and medicinal applications.

    In addition to field observations, the visit included informative discussions on the ecological importance of mangrove environments and the specialized adaptations of plant species that flourish in saline and waterlogged conditions. A total of 156 medicinal plant species were identified during the excursion. Among these were several rare and significant species, including Mothirakkanni, Kachcholam, Sengkeelanelli, and Vishnukiranthi, which were examined and studied in depth.

    This field experience greatly enhanced students’ understanding of medicinal botany and reinforced the value of biodiversity conservation. By integrating theoretical knowledge with real-world application, the field visit effectively met the educational objectives of the subject.

  • Field Visit Nagar Kovil

    Location: Nagar Kovil (Paruththithurai)

    A field visit was organized for second-year BSMS students to the Nagar Kovil area in Paruththithurai on 7th March 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM, as part of the Mooligaiyeyal – II curriculum. The purpose of this academic excursion was to provide students with hands-on experience in the identification and study of medicinal plants, with a focus on those found in mangrove ecosystems.

    The visit was conducted under the guidance of Dr. Mrs. V. Sathyaseelan, Dr. Mrs. N. Nithyakumar, and temporary demonstrators from the Department of Gunapadam. During the visit, students actively engaged in identifying and documenting a wide range of herbs and medicinal plants, noting their Siddha names, botanical names, and therapeutic properties.

    The program also included in-depth discussions on the ecological importance of mangrove habitats and the adaptive features of plants thriving in saline and waterlogged environments. A total of 186 medicinal plant species were identified during the visit. Among these, several rare and regionally endemic species such as Kadatsangan, Birami, Karandhai, Umiri, Kaliththi, Mulnilavu, and Sivanar Vembu were closely examined and studied.

    This field visit significantly enhanced students’ knowledge of medicinal botany and reinforced the critical importance of biodiversity conservation. It served as a valuable opportunity to bridge theoretical learning with practical application, successfully achieving the academic objectives of the course.

  • Field Visit Kokkavil

    Location: Kokkavil, Mullaitivu

    As part of the curriculum for the subject Mooligaiyeyal – II, a field visit was organized for second-year BSMS students to the Kokkavil area in Mullaitivu on 17th January 2025, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The primary objective of the visit was to offer students practical exposure to the identification and study of medicinal plants in their natural habitat.

    The visit was conducted under the expert guidance of Dr. Mrs. V. Sathyaseelan, Dr. Mrs. N. Nithyakumar, and temporary demonstrators from the Department of Gunapadam. During the visit, students actively participated in identifying and documenting a variety of medicinal plants, recording their Siddha names, botanical names, and known medicinal properties.

    A key feature of the visit was the exploration of mangrove ecosystems and their ecological importance. Discussions were held on the adaptive features and therapeutic potentials of plants growing in saline and waterlogged environments. A total of 110 medicinal plant species were identified during the field study. Among these were several rare and noteworthy species, including Mothirakkanni, Muthirai, Semmanaththi, Mul Nilavu, Kadal Raanji, Vel Velan, Kalmuresu, Kal Iththi with aerial roots, Vishnu Kiranthi, and a localized population of Sivanaar Vembu.

    The field visit greatly enriched the students’ understanding of medicinal botany and emphasized the significance of preserving plant biodiversity. It effectively complemented classroom learning, bridging theoretical concepts with real-world application, and successfully fulfilled the learning outcomes of the subject.

  • Field Visit Kunjikulam, Mannar

    Location: Kunjikulam, Mannar

    As part of the Mooligaiyeyal – II curriculum, a field visit was organized for second-year BSMS students to the Kunjikulam area in Mannar on 31st January 2025, from 8:30 AM to 2:30 PM. The objective of this visit was to provide students with practical exposure to the identification and study of medicinal plants, with a specific focus on species found in mangrove ecosystems.

    The visit was conducted under the guidance of faculty members from the Department of Gunapadam. During the excursion, students engaged actively in identifying and documenting various medicinal plants, including their Siddha names, botanical names, and therapeutic applications.

    A major component of the field trip was the exploration of the ecological roles of mangroves and the distinctive adaptations of flora that thrive in saline and waterlogged environments. A total of 236 medicinal plant species were identified during the visit. Notable among these were several rare and significant species such as Katkaarai, Thenthookki, Theendavaadi, Surulipattai, Valampuri, Pirambu, Perumthumbai, Peruthuththi, Sitramatti, Muthirai, Karunchembbai, Mayiladikurunthu, and Neerkadambu.

    This field study not only deepened students’ understanding of medicinal botany but also emphasized the importance of biodiversity conservation. By bridging theoretical concepts with practical application, the visit effectively fulfilled the academic and experiential learning outcomes of the subject.

  • PUNKUDUTIVU FIELD VISIT

    Location: Kannaki puram, Punkudutivu, Jaffna District, Sri Lanka.

    The field visit was organized as part of our curriculum under Mooligaiyeyal – II to enhance practical exposure to the identification and study of medicinal plants, with a specific focus on species found in scrubland, salt marshes, and intertidal areas, in addition to mangrove vegetation. It was conducted during the academic field hours of 2nd BSMS students guided by academic staff and temporary demonstrators of department of Gunapadam.

    The objective was to identify and document medicinal plants growing in a specific region, along with their therapeutic uses, life cycle, toxic properties, and useful parts. Also understand the ecological and medicinal significance of various plant species used in siddha healthcare systems.

    The field visit commenced at 08:30 AM and concluded at 12:45 PM. During the walk, we observed and documented nearly 102 species of medicinal herbal plants. We identified their botanical names and plant families, noted the parts of the plants used in medicine, and studied the ecological and medicinal significance of various species used in the Siddha healthcare system. We also noted botanical features (such as leaf shape, flowers, and bark), and their habitats. Notable among these were several rare and significant species such as Cassia obovate, Colocynthis vulgaris, Gemlila asiatica, Randic dumetorum, Aristolochia bracteolate, Lumnitzera racemose, Launaea pinnatifida, Emilia sonchifolia, Carmona retusa, Enicostemma litterate. Some plant specimens were also collected for nursery preparation, while others were gathered for herbarium specimen preparation and medicinal use.

    This field study not only deepened students’ understanding of medicinal botany but also emphasized the importance of biodiversity conservation. By bridging theoretical concepts with practical application, the visit effectively fulfilled the academic and experiential learning outcomes of the subject.

  • Faculty Inauguration and Orientation programs for the Fresher’s(Academic year 2022/2023)

    The Inauguration day for the fresher’s of the academic year 2022/2023 was celebrated in Faculty
    of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna on 19th of December 2024 on the same day of Agasthiyar commemoration day and Faculty opening ceremony. On that day, the inauguration program was started at 1.30 p.m. Mr. S.Edward Reginold, Deputy Registrar, Faculty of Siddha Medicine, welcomed all the guest, parents and students. Mrs. A. Janaki, Assistant Registrar/ Student welfare services, University of Jaffna, Mrs. Mythili Visakaruban, Deputy Librarian/ University of Jaffna, Prof. G. Sashikesh, Director/ Student Welfare services, delivered their speech and wishes for the students. Vice chancellor of University of Jaffna and Dean/ Faculty of Siddha Medicine wished the students during morning program on faculty opening ceremony.

  • Agasthiyar Commemoration Day Celebration

    The Agasthiyar commemoration day was celebrated in Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna on 19th of December 2024 which is the birthday (Janana Thinam) of Agasthiyar in Ayiliya natchaththiram. On that day, an idol of Agasthiyar was consecrated at the premises of Sri Sithy Vinayagar temple of Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna. The Agasthiyar idol was donated by the following Senior Lecturers:

Also new students who were enrolled for the 1st year BSMS with their parents were joined us in the blessed day. On the same day the delightful sweet pongal and delicious lunch was prepared and served for the all guests and participants. Concurrently, the Siddha Medical students and Student Association of Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna gave their speech and Agasthiyar Vanakkam.

  • Siddha Medicos Week & Siddha Medicos Night 2025

    The vibrant Siddha Medicos Week 2025 began on Friday, 09.05.2025, with an official flag-raising ceremony held on the University premises. Three teams—Agasthiyar, Thirumoolar, and Bogar—were introduced, with a total of six captains appointed. The official declaration of the teams was conducted with much enthusiasm. The event also marked the launch of the official logo and T-shirt of Siddha Medicos Week. As part of the day’s celebrations, which was observed as Planting Day, plant nurseries were distributed to the team captains to promote environmental awareness.

    Day 2 – 11.05.2025 (Painting Day):
    A cricket tournament was held at the Main Ground, University of Jaffna. The day was also observed as Painting Day, encouraging creativity and artistic expression.

    Day 3 – 12.05.2025 (Photography Day):
    Badminton and table tennis competitions were conducted at the Indoor Stadium of the University of Jaffna. The day was themed as Photography Day, highlighting the power of capturing memories.

    Day 4 – 13.05.2025 (Holy Day):
    Track and field events took place at the Main Ground, University of Jaffna, energizing the students and fostering team spirit. This day was celebrated as Holy Day, emphasizing wellness and spirituality.

    Day 5 – 14.05.2025:
    A chess tournament was organized in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine.

    Day 6 – 16.05.2025:
    Carrom competitions were held in the Faculty Auditorium.

    Day 7 – 17.05.2025 (Hand Printing Day):
    The Hand Printing Day activity took place in the Faculty Auditorium, where students participated in creating colorful handprint murals symbolizing unity and celebration.

    Day 8 – 25.05.2025 (Signature Day):
    Volleyball and netball matches were held at the Main Ground, with the day recognized as Signature Day, where students shared their thoughts and autographs as mementos.

    Day 9 – 01.06.2025 (Cultural Day):
    A grand Cultural Day celebration was held at the Nuffield School Ground, featuring traditional performances.

    Day 10 – 03.06.2025:
    A blood donation camp was organized at the Faculty Auditorium, promoting the value of giving and community service.

    Siddha Medicos Night
    The grand finale of Siddha Medicos Week 2025 culminated in a vibrant celebration—Siddha Medicos Night, held on Monday, 16th June 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine. The evening began at 4:30 p.m., graced by the presence of esteemed guests:

    Chief Guest: Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jaffna
    Guest of Honour: Mrs. S. Srisatkunarajah, Lecturer Special Guest: Mrs. J. Saravanapavaiyer, Retired Instructor, Physical Education Unit, University of Jaffna

    The night was filled with colorful performances showcasing the music, dance, and hidden talents of the Siddha students. Awards were presented to all the winners of the various events held throughout the Siddha Medicos Week.

    Final results:
    Team Agasthiyar was declared the Champion Team of Siddha Medicos Week 2025. Team Thirumoolar secured the position of 1st Runner-up. Team Bogar was announced as the 2nd Runner-up.

    The event came to a heartfelt close at 9:00 p.m., wrapping up ten days of celebration, tradition, sportsmanship, and togetherness.

  • Awareness of Medicinal Herbal Plants and Their Uses

    Date: 16/05/2025
    Organized by: Department of Gunapadam, Faculty of Siddha Medicine

    A successful seminar on “Awareness of Medicinal Herbal Plants and Their Uses” was conducted on 16th May 2025 for the students and teachers of J/Kaithady Nunavil Government Tamil Mixed College. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from 21 boys, 26 girls from grade 6, 7, 8,9,10 &11 and 5 teachers.

    The program was organized by the Department of Gunapadam, Faculty of Siddha Medicine. It was conducted during the academic field hours of 2nd BSMS students guided by academic staff and temporary demonstrators of department of Gunapadam.

    The seminar commenced at 8:30 AM and concluded at 12:00 PM. The first session took place in the herbal garden within the faculty premises, where participants were introduced to a variety of 500 species of medicinal herbal plants and the net house which contain 200 species of hill station plants and the sales center, focusing on plant identification, medicinal properties, and traditional home remedies.

    Following this, herbal porridge was distributed to the school students and teachers. Then, the session was continued with a PowerPoint presentation, during which the 39th batch Siddha medical students – Mr. Dilshan, Miss Muthahhara, Miss Suwathy and Miss Hafsa – with the support of the whole batch, delivered informative talks on the health benefits of tropical fruits, cereals, and spinaches, highlighting their role in improving the quality of life through simple and effective home remedies and flowers and stress management. About 10 herbarium sheets for each system were explained by Miss. Maheeza, Miss. Pearlthree and Miss. Nasrin and dry herbs were exhibited and explained by Miss. Kifa, Miss Mafasa and Miss. Rakshana

    The awareness programme was concluded with the distribution of medicinal herbal
    nursery plants to all student and teacher participants. The seminar was guided by Dr.(Mrs.) N.Nithiyakumar, Dr.(Mrs.)V. Sathiyaseelan, Mr, J. Eugin Benat Mr. A.Sanjayan, Miss.T.Sharsaayini, Miss.V.Gumuthagini and Miss. A. Mayoori.
