  • Faculty Inauguration and Orientation programs for the Fresher’s(Academic year 2022/2023)

    The Inauguration day for the fresher’s of the academic year 2022/2023 was celebrated in Faculty
    of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna on 19th of December 2024 on the same day of Agasthiyar commemoration day and Faculty opening ceremony. On that day, the inauguration program was started at 1.30 p.m. Mr. S.Edward Reginold, Deputy Registrar, Faculty of Siddha Medicine, welcomed all the guest, parents and students. Mrs. A. Janaki, Assistant Registrar/ Student welfare services, University of Jaffna, Mrs. Mythili Visakaruban, Deputy Librarian/ University of Jaffna, Prof. G. Sashikesh, Director/ Student Welfare services, delivered their speech and wishes for the students. Vice chancellor of University of Jaffna and Dean/ Faculty of Siddha Medicine wished the students during morning program on faculty opening ceremony.

  • Siddha Medicos Week & Siddha Medicos Night 2025

    The vibrant Siddha Medicos Week 2025 began on Friday, 09.05.2025, with an official flag-raising ceremony held on the University premises. Three teams—Agasthiyar, Thirumoolar, and Bogar—were introduced, with a total of six captains appointed. The official declaration of the teams was conducted with much enthusiasm. The event also marked the launch of the official logo and T-shirt of Siddha Medicos Week. As part of the day’s celebrations, which was observed as Planting Day, plant nurseries were distributed to the team captains to promote environmental awareness.

    Day 2 – 11.05.2025 (Painting Day):
    A cricket tournament was held at the Main Ground, University of Jaffna. The day was also observed as Painting Day, encouraging creativity and artistic expression.

    Day 3 – 12.05.2025 (Photography Day):
    Badminton and table tennis competitions were conducted at the Indoor Stadium of the University of Jaffna. The day was themed as Photography Day, highlighting the power of capturing memories.

    Day 4 – 13.05.2025 (Holy Day):
    Track and field events took place at the Main Ground, University of Jaffna, energizing the students and fostering team spirit. This day was celebrated as Holy Day, emphasizing wellness and spirituality.

    Day 5 – 14.05.2025:
    A chess tournament was organized in the Auditorium of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine.

    Day 6 – 16.05.2025:
    Carrom competitions were held in the Faculty Auditorium.

    Day 7 – 17.05.2025 (Hand Printing Day):
    The Hand Printing Day activity took place in the Faculty Auditorium, where students participated in creating colorful handprint murals symbolizing unity and celebration.

    Day 8 – 25.05.2025 (Signature Day):
    Volleyball and netball matches were held at the Main Ground, with the day recognized as Signature Day, where students shared their thoughts and autographs as mementos.

    Day 9 – 01.06.2025 (Cultural Day):
    A grand Cultural Day celebration was held at the Nuffield School Ground, featuring traditional performances.

    Day 10 – 03.06.2025:
    A blood donation camp was organized at the Faculty Auditorium, promoting the value of giving and community service.

    Siddha Medicos Night
    The grand finale of Siddha Medicos Week 2025 culminated in a vibrant celebration—Siddha Medicos Night, held on Monday, 16th June 2025 at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine. The evening began at 4:30 p.m., graced by the presence of esteemed guests:

    Chief Guest: Professor S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jaffna
    Guest of Honour: Mrs. S. Srisatkunarajah, Lecturer Special Guest: Mrs. J. Saravanapavaiyer, Retired Instructor, Physical Education Unit, University of Jaffna

    The night was filled with colorful performances showcasing the music, dance, and hidden talents of the Siddha students. Awards were presented to all the winners of the various events held throughout the Siddha Medicos Week.

    Final results:
    Team Agasthiyar was declared the Champion Team of Siddha Medicos Week 2025. Team Thirumoolar secured the position of 1st Runner-up. Team Bogar was announced as the 2nd Runner-up.

    The event came to a heartfelt close at 9:00 p.m., wrapping up ten days of celebration, tradition, sportsmanship, and togetherness.

  • VEDUKKUNARI MALAI-FOREST: FIELD VISIT REPORT

    Date of Visit: 10th may 2025

    Time: 11 A.M to 4 P.M.

    Location: Paalamotai Nainamadu Forest Reserve in Olumadu, near Nedunkeni in Vavuniya District, Sri Lanka.

    Organized by: Faculty of Siddha Medicine, Department of Gunapadam

    Participants: 2nd BSMS Students

    Supervisor: Dr.Mrs. V. Sathiyaseelan, Dr. Mrs. N. Nithiakumar,

    Guide: Mr. A. Sanjayan, Mr, J. Eugin Benat, Miss. A. Mayoori, Miss. T. Sharsaagini, Miss. V. Gumuthagini.

    The field visit was organized as part of our curriculum under Mooligaiyeyal – II to enhance practical knowledge about medicinal plants and their uses in traditional and modern medicine. It was conducted during the academic field hours of 2nd BSMS students guided by academic staff and temporary demonstrators of department of Gunapadam.

    The objective was to identify and document medicinal plants growing in a specific region, along with their therapeutic uses, life cycle, toxic properties, and useful parts. Also understand the ecological and medicinal significance of various plant species used in siddha healthcare systems.

    The field visit commenced at 11:00 AM and concluded at 4:00 PM. During the forest walk, we observed and documented nearly 120 species of medicinal herbal plants. We identified their botanical names and plant families, noted the parts of the plants used in medicine, and studied the ecological and medicinal significance of various species used in the Siddha healthcare system. We also noted botanical features (such as leaf shape, flowers, and bark), and their habitats.

    Among the identified species, nearly 15 are rare medicinal plants are rare, such as Vedpalai, Panichchai, Pirai, Karunkali, Mulli, Kaddu Kaarai, Veerai, Kalthaamarai, Peikommaddi,kakkaikolli, murali, savurikkodi, etc Some plant specimens were also collected for nursery preparation, while others were gathered for herbarium specimen preparation and medicinal use.

    The field visit was an enriching experience that bridged theoretical knowledge with field-based learning. It underscored the importance of preserving biodiversity and encouraged us to further explore the field of ethnobotany.

  • Sahasak Nimavum- 2025

    Event Overview:

    The Faculty of Siddha Medicine, University of Jaffna, proudly participated in the “Sahasak Nimavum” 2025 – International Inventions & Innovations Competition & National Exhibition, organized by Sri Lanka Inventors Commission under the Ministry of Science and Technology. The event was held on 25th – 27th April 2025 at BMICH, Colombo. The Faculty participated under the University Business Linkage (UBL) Cell and the involvement was coordinated by Dr. (Mrs.) R. Sugeevan, UBL, Faculty Coordinator.

    The participation of the Faculty of Siddha Medicine in Sahasak Nimavum” 2025 – International Inventions & Innovations Competition & National Exhibition, was a resounding success. It provided an excellent platform for the students to showcase their innovative talents and traditional knowledge. This experience has motivated the faculty to continue promoting research, innovation, and entrepreneurship in Siddha medicine at both national and international levels.

    Stall Details:

    Our faculty’s exhibition stall displayed a wide range of herbal products, which attracted a significant number of visitors, including researchers, entrepreneurs, academicians, school students and the general public. The professionalism and creativity demonstrated at the stall highlighted the potential of traditional knowledge integrated with modern innovation.

  • Field Visits

    Second BSMS STUDENTS visited to the following places for identifying medicinal plants under the supervision of lectures, Medical officers, traditional doctors and Demonstrators. Around 150 medicinal, rare, redlisted and endermic plants were identified in this visit.

    2023.03.14 சித்த மருத்துவ அலகில், யாழ் போதானா வைத்தியாசலையின் இரத்த வங்கியினால் ஒழுங்கமைக்கப்பட்டு சித்த மருத்துவ மாணவ ஒன்றியத்தின் பூரண ஆதரவுடன் இரத்த தானம் வழங்கும் நிகழ்வு இடம் பெற்றது.
